The Cinque Terre trails: which one to walk
The Sentiero Azzurro between Monterosso and Vernazza is the finest stretch and also the hardest: about two hours, many steps, real climbing. The Via dell'Amore between Riomaggiore and Manarola is the easiest and the shortest. The high paths are the most beautiful and the least crowded, but they need proper shoes.
These are not strolls
It is the most common misunderstanding. The Cinque Terre trails cross terraces that fall straight to the sea, alternating stone staircases with narrow passages: they are mountain paths that happen to run near the water, not seafront promenades.
You need closed shoes with a gripping sole, water and a hat. Flip-flops are the single biggest reason the rescue service gets called out.
Check before you set off
Some sections close after landslides or for maintenance, sometimes for whole seasons, and the information you find online ages badly. The current state comes from the Cinque Terre National Park authority.
